Project Management for Decommissioning of Hope Brook Mine

Newfoundland and Labrador

Government of Newfoundland and Labrador

In 1999, the Hope Brook Mine returned to the responsibility of the government after the bankruptcy of the former operator Royal Oak. In September 2001, Denison Environmental Services (DES) was awarded the Project Management for the site rehabilitation work.

In addition to providing complete Project Management for the decommissioning of the site DES also had the responsibility to organize and administer the care and maintenance of the property including all monitoring, treatment and regulatory reporting.

The remediation required at the site was extensive and included:

  • Waste rock relocation
  • Dam raising and spillway modifications
  • Tailings relocation
  • Subsidence remediation
  • Rock slope rehabilitation
  • Demolition of site facilities
  • Disposal of Assets
  • Water treatment and management of the watershed
