Quirke Tailings Management Area

Owned by Rio Algom

This interesting aerial view looking west over the Quirke flooded tailings management area illustrates a number of features. In the foreground is the Serpent River on the left and the reclaimed mill site on the right with highway 108 traversing the picture just below centre.  The upper half of the picture is dominated by the ponds comprising the Quirke tailings management area.  Due to the unique topography, the tailings were flooded in a tiered series of five cells contained by internal dykes, each about 10 feet high.  A series of perimeter engineered dams contains the tailings and cover water.  Dunlop Lake can be seen in the upper background.  Flooding of this tailings management area was completed in 1994.
