Pronto Tailings Management Area

Owned by Rio Algom

The Pronto dry tailings management area shown here during the final stages of reclamation in 2002.  The gray area is an area of the tailings that has been recently covered with paper mill biosolids from the Ste. Marys Paper mill in Sault Ste Marie.  This waste product from paper manufacturing is an excellent source of mulch and plant nutrients used to promote growth on numerous sites such as reclaimed landfill sites and mine tailings.  This method of promoting vegetative cover has been very successful.  In the background the North Channel of Lake Huron can be seen.  The buildings shown at the centre left are the Lafarge Cement plant and the Carmeuse Lime plants situated on a deep water port in the Serpent Harbour.
