Nordic Mine and Tailings Management Area Owned by Rio Algom An aerial view of the Nordic dry tailings management area looking west with the City of Elliot Lake, Westner and Elliot Lakes in the upper background. The pond in the left foreground is the freshwater Buckles Creek, separated from the Nordic tailings by Pecors Lake road, a runoff collection ditch, and Dam F (the gray feature across the foreground of the picture). The large open area partially covered by trees is the main tailings deposit. The open area on the left centre is the reclaimed mine and mill site. The white building is the effluent treatment plant that operates continuously to neutralize acidic runoff and remove metals prior to release to the environment. Tailings reclamation at this site took place in the 1970’s.
Lacnor Tailings Management Area The Lacnor dry tailings area centre with the Stanleigh
flooded tailings in the upper background. The Lacnor tailings final reclamation
was completed in 1999 with the addition of surface drainage channels and the
upgrading of the retention dams (the gray structures in the centre of the
picture. The brown colouration in the runoff collection pond and stream is
caused by iron in the water. This runoff drains to the Nordic tailings
management area showing in the bottom left corner. Water is directed to the
Nordic effluent treatment plant prior to release to the environment. |
