Dam Construction and Capping at Winston Lake Mine, Schreiber, Ontario

In 1999, Denison Environmental Services (DES) was awarded construction work at INMET's Winston Lake Mine. The facility was being prepared for long term care and maintenance following the closure earlier that year.

The work at the site included;

Dam raising in the Main Tailings Basin
4 Permanent concrete mine closures
Dredging of the polishing pond
Landfill decommissioning and drainage control

Using imported bentonite as an additive to improve the impermeability of the dams core DES worked through difficult weather and logistic hurdles to complete this project before the onset of winter.

Shaft capping has become a specialty of the DES crews. Innovation and experience help to create structures that will meet client and regulatory requirements at reasonable cost.
