Select Demolition at Levack Mine, Levack, Ontario

In the fall of 2001, Denison Environmental Services (DES) was awarded a contract to perform select demolition of several of the structures remaining at the historic Levack Mine site.

One of the most challenging buildings was the Cement Plant which contained two 200 ton capacity sand tanks and a 50 ton cement tank. This plant was used to make cemented backfill to be placed underground. Not only was it interesting structurally but the entire surface was sheathed in Transite (a cemented asbestos product). It was a major undertaking requiring a creative yet safe execution.

Several of the major components of this project included:

Parking lot expansion
Shaft capping (4 compartment opening)
Reduction of massive thickener foundations by hydraulic hammer
Decant decommissioning
Select building demolition (including hazardous materials abatement)
