Project Management for Decommissioning of Hope Brook Mine
Client: Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
In 1999, the Hope Brook Mine returned to the responsibility of the government after the bankruptcy of the former operator Royal Oak. In September 2001, Denison Environment Services (DES) was awarded the Project Management for the site work to be completed over the next 30 months. In addition to providing complete Project Management for the decommissioning of the site DES also had the responsibility to organize and administer the care and maintenance of the property including all monitoring, treatment and reporting for the period of the contract.

The remediation required at the site is extensive and includes:

  • Waste rock relocation
  • Dam raising and spillway modifications
  • Tailings relocation
  • Subsidence remediation
  • Rock slope rehabilitation
  • Demolition of site facilities
  • Disposal of Assets
  • Water treatment and hydrological management of the watershed

The Mill facility will be removed and the site remediated. As part of this process the assets from the mill are currently for sale. The Department of Mines and Energy has awarded the sales contract to a firm from Newfoundland and Labrador. Please feel free to contact DES if you are interested in assets from the site and we will put you in touch with the sales agent.

For more information on this project or the services we can provide please contact Ian Ludgate, Manager.
